I have wanted to write about this for a long time.  I have so much to say about it. The problem is that I don’t have any stories about it– not that I am willing to share, at least. The world belongs to people who have the best stories.  Sexual liberation belongs to women who are willing to stand up and say “I have sex! I have this much sex with this many people, and it’s okay!” or  “I dress like this, so take that society!” Purity, modesty, and all that is pro-Virgin power comes from personal testimonies and Conservatively told bible stories.

And then there’s me.

Of course, I admire people who do tell their stories. They have changed my life, and the world really does belong to them.  Stories have a neat way of improving social consciousness, evolving into full-blown movements. [Insert Pokemon evolution joke here?].

Book Reviews

Hi internet people,

I’m looking for reviewers to check out my book The Other Side. If you have an established or occasional book review website or blog and you like scifi/space opera/action/adventure/strong gay characters who aren’t vessels for smut/philosophical inquiry, I’ll be happy to send you a copy.

If this sounds interesting, you can contact me directly at williamxwolfe@live.com

Cheers!

WW

They reading you! (me!)

I just googled myself (sorry, TMI I know) and I came across a website offering “William Wolfe – The Other Side, free PDF eBook Epub Torrent online Download.”

internet-piracy

I stole this picture from the internet

A lot of people would probably be pissed to see this and report the website for piracy. I, on the other hand, smiled because I remembered something the poet Nikki Giovanni once said in an interview.

She had a friend or something (It was a while ago so I don’t remember the details) who owned a bookstore in Queens or Harlem or some other New York Burrough. One time he called her to tell her that several copies of her book had been stolen from his store.

She said – Oh, I’m sorry someone stole from your store. And – that’s too bad, I was hoping my books would sell.

Bookstore owner friend said – No, it’s good! It means they reading you!

I know this goes against copyright laws and is technically cyber crime directed toward me specifically, but if someone wants to read my book enough to steal it, well, that means they reading me!

*NOTE: William Wolfe does not condone stealing in any form, but does support sharing.

Frozen Soundscapes

gl_temp_conversion_tableThe Canadian winter has been brutal the last couple of weeks, with temperatures plummeting to -40 degrees. That’s so cold it evens out the Farenheit and Celsius scales. Numbers are insufficient to represent these temperatures. Your eyelashes and nosehairs freeze in moments. Simply put: It’s really freaking cold!

As I writer and a dreamer I spend a lot of my time viewing the world around me through the filter of my imagination. I create worlds in my mind and watch as the world in front of me transforms around my thoughts.

You know those moments when something inside you makes the outside world look different? That’s what helps me get amazing-auroras-northern-lights-holidaythrough the cold. That and Sigur Ros. Their bizarrely beautiful otherworldly sounds inspired by the torn and jagged volcanic landscape of Iceland transform the bitter Canadian winter into a land apart from geography. Wild icy lands stretching endlessly until the horizon fold in on itself.

This transferral of the real into the imagined somehow makes the cold more bearable. It distances it, yet makes it more profound. The air becomes a haunting cold that whispers through the ghosts of explorers who met their deaths in the brutal freeze of winter.

Is a Superbole like a Hyperbole?

So apparently I don’t follow any media that covers football. Yes, it turns out that’s possible. There are no adds or updates on football in the books that I read, on the websites I frequent (Book reviews, blogs, Science news, even when I read newspapers I don’t click on the sports tab.

I saw a movie preview last week that said: “Opening Super Bowl Weekend!” And then I realized to what a large extent the rock that I live under blocks out the sun and the rest of the outside world. After seeing the trailer I thought:

1) When the hell is the Super Bowl?

2) Since when did the Super Bowl become a standard measure of time?

3) What about me and the other 14 people in North America who don’t follow football? Without even knowing how or when to set our clocks to Standard Football Time we are going to miss a lot of movies, and probably gallery openings, author readings, musicals, Project Runway and Glee episodes, and all of the other things that don’t cross over with football in the center of the Venn Diagram of Life.

The Future is Now!

NA/BIONICA bionic arm! For real!!! http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2006/09/13/AR2006091302271.html

Every time I hear about something like this I am utterly humbled and amazed by the forward (relative) motion of our species. Whether it’s a car that parks (or now drives) itself, or a synthetic limb that acts almost like a real one, it brings us closer to the imagined collective future of sci fi.

That is why I read and write sci fi. It is not some imaginary projection of a world that may be. It’s the reflection of an ever-changing present. It’s the first bursts of light across the horizon of tomorrow. It is that which is impossible continuosly made possible.

Imagine the possible.

Happy February! (Free First Friday in February!)

now-23-february1

February is a long cold month, but at its heart it’s about love (sorry, I had to). Since I loved writing The Other Side, and I want you to at least have the chance to love reading it, the ebook is going on sale as part of a little promotion I like to call Free First Friday in February.

The Other Side will be available from the Kindle store for FREE! all day February 1st, starting at 12AM PST. (The west coast thinks they own the world don’t they?) And if you’re old fashioned and enjoy reading on paper like me, stay posted, it will soon be available in tree pulp form as well.
